Display & Publishing - Activity Network

Bookmark and Share

OVERVIEW – The Activity Network displays your project as a diagram of activities and relationships according to the work breakdown structure (WBS). A red border around an activity box indicates a critical activity. A line connecting activity boxes indicates an activity relationship.

You can control nearly every aspect of the Activity Network, including the appearance of activities, the contents of activity boxes, and the spacing between activities.

The left pane of the Activity Network layout always displays the WBS hierarchy, regardless of the current grouping selection. The right pane displays the selected WBS element’s assigned activities. If you specify a grouping option other than WBS, the right pane of the Activity Network layout groups and displays the selected WBS element’s activities according to the activity data item you specify, for example, grouped by project status or budget at completion.

You can save the Activity Network layout on your computer to e-mail to another project user or to retrieve later.

  1. In the activity view, click the Activity Network button on the main toolbar.

  2. Click the Show/Hide Bottom Layout button to give us more space to work with.

  3. You can use the panel on the left-hand side to focus on the activities of one or more WBS’s in your project.  Currently, our open project is highlighted.  Click on Finishes in order to isolate our view to only activities in that WBS.

  4. Click on the magnifying glass on the toolbar to zoom in.

  5. To add information to the activity boxes, right click in the Activity Network panel and choose Activity Network Options from the drop-down menu.

  6. From the drop-down menu you can choose from several box templates in order to choose what information you want displayed on the activity boxes.  Choose the Current Status template and you get additional information regarding the activity.

  7. Click OK to close the options window.

  8. The activity network boxes now have additional information on them.  Let’s now rearrange the activities so that all of them can be visible at a level of magnification where we can by clicking and dragging each box.

  9. You can also add relationship ties from this view as well.  If you want to create a predecessor to an activity move your cursor to the front edge of the activity box until your cursor turns into the relationship symbol.  At this point click and hold while moving your cursor over to the activity you want to set as a predecessor.  If you want the predecessor activity to have a FS relationship then drag the relationship line to the right side of the predecessor box.  Likewise, if you drag the relationship line to the left side of the predecessor’s box, the predecessor will have a SS relationship type.

  10. Finally, save the layout as Rm. 201 – Activity Network.

Note – To print out the Activity Network you must have it open in the activity view before going to the print preview.  Once at the Print Preview screen go to Page Setup and click on the Options tab.  Check the Activity Network box.  In order to just printout the Activity Network make sure that all other options

  11. are unchecked.
